That’s not the set of muscles

That is why
There’s a look

To an involuntary
Burst of joy

You see what I mean?

I couldn’t act my way of a paper bag
A grease-soaked bag with a hole on the bottom
But I use the set of muscles like a pro
You’d never know

When I’m old and feeble
Flirting with the palliative nurses
I’ll still of think of her at the other end
Of the long table of pupusas
Chipping black nail polish
Looking kind of shy
It stayed with me
As the weeks went by

I got cool new shirts and cool new shades
A bunch of cool new things to say
But I don’t
I don’t feel cool
I failed a beautiful soul

We watched Clint drive across the border
Then at Kam Shing the waiter took our order
We sat together at Jewish Christmas
We sat together the whole time

As we waited for our photo to be taken
I realized the pyramidal motor system
Was not in play
My smile didn’t need the set of muscles

It was only a small smile
You wouldn’t call it a burst
But I knew inside me
There was great joy
Peace and joy
